DOING THE DECOBIKE
Miami Beach is flat, warm, and covered in concrete. In other words, it's about perfect for
cycling. Yet cycling infrastructure has been slow to develop on the beach, leading to
traffic snarls, gridlock and the inevitable slow roll of a Hummer blasting electronic dance
music at every stop light on Collins Ave.
Well no more (although the cars blasting dance music will probably be with us for a
long time). DecoBike saves the day, sort of. This bike-sharing program, modeled after
similar initiatives in New York, London and Paris, makes cycling from South Beach to
Surfside a relative breeze. Just rock up to a solar-powered DecoBike station (a handy
dandy map can be found at www.decobike.com/map-location ) , insert a credit card and
ride away. You can return your bike at any DecoBike location.
Pricing varies; you'll pay $4 for 30 minutes, $6 for an hour, $10 for two hours, or $24
for a whole day's riding. If you keep your bicycle past the allotted time, you're charged $4
per half-hour. So get out there! Bike away! Get in shape so you don't feel self-conscious
on South Beach while biking around South Beach. Winning all around.
