In-Depth Information
Just away from the main drag are a fountain and monument, collectively entitled
La
both to the Cuban provinces and to migrants who drowned in 1994 while trying to leave
Cuba on a ship,
13 de Marzo,
which was sunk by Castro's forces just off the coast.
Cuba Ocho
GALLERY
The jewel of the Little Havana Art District, Cuba Ocho functions as a community center,
art gallery and research outpost for all things Cuban. The interior resembles a cool old
Havana cigar bar, yet the walls are decked out in artwork that references both the classical
past of Cuban art and its avant-garde future. Frequent live music, films, drama perform-
ances, readings and other events go off every week. The center opens during the evening
for these events; check online for more information.
Little Havana Art District
GALLERY
OK, it's not Wynwood. In fact, it's more 'Art Block' than district. But this little strip of
galleries and studios does house one of the best concentrations of Latin American art (par-
ticularly from Cuba) in Miami. Any one of the studios is worth a stop and a browse. This
particular stretch of Little Havana is the epicenter of the
Viernes Culturales
celebration.
Bay of Pigs Museum & Library
LIBRARY
This small museum is more of a memorial to the 2506th Brigade, otherwise known as the
crew of the ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion. Whatever your thoughts on Fidel Castro and
Cuban Americans, pay a visit here to flesh out one side of this contentious story. You'll
likely chat with survivors of the Bay of Pigs, who like to hang out here surrounded by pic-
tures of comrades who never made it back to the USA.
