Hurricanes
Florida hurricane season extends from June through November, but the peak is September
and October. Relatively speaking, very few Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico storms be-
come hurricanes, and fewer still are accurate enough to hit Florida, but the devastation they
wreak when they do can be enormous. Travelers should take all hurricane alerts, warnings
and evacuation orders seriously.
Hurricanes are generally sighted well in advance, allowing time to prepare. When a hur-
ricane threatens, listen to radio and TV news reports. For more information on storms and
