Getting There & Around
Destin is about 45 miles west of Panama City Beach and about 47 miles east of Pensacola,
along Hwy 98. The Okaloosa Regional Airport ( www.flyvps.com ) serves the Destin-Fort
Walton area, with direct services to many US cities, including Chicago and Tampa, with
American Eagle, Vision, Delta, Continental and US Airways.
Okaloosa County Transit ( www.rideoct.org ) runs a shuttle service four times daily from
8am to 7pm Monday to Saturday in winter, and eight times daily from 8am to 10pm in
summer (fares $1).
Beaches of South Walton & Scenic Highway 30A
Sandwiched between Destin and Panama City along Scenic Hwy 30A , these 15 unincor-
porated communities make up what is collectively known as Santa Rosa Beach or the
Beaches of South Walton . Each town has its own identity, although most are master-
planned resort towns with architecture following set themes. All lie along an incredibly
gorgeous stretch of gulf that's been dubbed the Emerald Coast . Driving the 30A along
this stretch is an absolute must: peer between the dream homes and beachfront townhouses
for glimpses of their million-dollar views, or park the car to wander around boutiques and
cafes.
