to teach strain measurements to the students is
measuring the strain by clamping the specimen
and applying the load. This method is usually the
less precise and it needs some specific cares such
as finding the adopted gage-length. Extensometer
is a more accurate method which needs a higher
attention during the installation and implementa-
tion processes Extensimetry is a desired method to
measure the local strains and for most of engineer-
ing materials with a small level of heterogeneity
or homogeneous materials. In this case the theory
behind the strain-gage working principle and the
attention to the implementing procedure is taught
to the students.
A relatively new and progressing technique to
have full-field strain information of the specimen
surface is the digital image correlation (DIC). This
is an optical non-contact method able to identify
the displacement field of a specimen, employing
the observation of the specimen surface by a digi-
tal camera. The algorithm is based mainly on the
