Plaça de Sant Just

Near the Ajuntament, down c/d'Hercules, Plaça de Sant Just is a handsome little corner
of the old town, and a particularly nice spot for an alfresco lunch at the excellent Café de
l'Acadèmia ,whichputsoutdiningtablesonthesquare.Thesquaresportsamedieval church
and restored fourteenth-century fountain, while one of the flanking Baroque palaces - the re-
markable Palau Moxó - is open for guided tours (by reservation only).

The very plain stone facade of the Església dels Sants Màrtirs Just i Pastor belies the
richstainedglassandelaboratechapeldecorationwithin.Thenamecommemoratesthecity's
earliest Christian martyrs, and it's claimed that this is the oldest parish church site in Bar-
celona, held to have first supported a foundation at the beginning of the ninth century; the
restored interior, though, dates from the mid-fourteenth century.

Built in 1770 for a wealthy land-owning family, the Palau Moxó has been in the hands of
the Moxó family ever since, which makes it unique in Barcelona - doubly so, in fact, since
most of the city's other palatial Baroque residences were destroyed during the Spanish Civil
War. Family members still live here, but certain of the public and private rooms are open for
guided tours each week, during which you'll see grand salons and intimate chambers that of-
fer a fascinating perspective on city-centre living, Baroque style. The family is an interesting
one too, with links to the Güell family, patrons of Antoni Gaudí.

The impressive buildings of the Barri Gòtic have many grand entrances - but there's only
one where you get to peek in first through a periscope and then slide down an enclosed
steel chute, water-park style, into the vaulted bowels of the building. There's also a regular
entrance and staircase for access to Catalan inventor Pep Torres' brain-boggling Barcelona
Museum of Ideas and Inventions, known as miba , which presents a mixture of his own in-
ventions and those of budding and established creative inventors worldwide. Lots are very
