uptown beer-and-tapas joint where the counters are piled high with elaborately assembled
dishes, supplemented by a blackboard list of daily specials like bacon, cheese and date skew-
ers and mushroom risotto (most tapas €2-10). It gets busy after work and at meal times, and
you might have to wait for a table. Daily 9am-1am.

pital Clinic; map . This sleek taverna, so called after the hospital over the road, is a gour-
met tapas spot that concentrates on rigorously sourced regional produce. Snacks at the solid
marble bar come in at just a few euros, but the serious food, accompanied by artisan-made
olive oil and a high-class wine list, is served at one of the ten tables (book in advance) and
runs to more like €10-30 a dish, from crispy suckling pig to sea urchins artfully arranged
atop mounds of sea salt. Mon-Sat 1-4pm & 8-11.30pm.

Gaig family restaurant was first founded in 1869 out in the Horta neighbourhood, but under
fourth-generation family member, Carles Gaig, it has a sleek downtown home at the Hotel
Cram. Its towering reputation (and Michelin star) rests on innovative reinterpretations of tra-
ditional Catalan dishes, so a typical arròs (rice) dish might combine foie gras , endive and
citrus. But when starters can cost €35, and the menúdegustació is around €100, you're talk-
