In-Depth Information
La Báscula c/dels Flassaders 30, La Ribera 933 199 866; Jaume I; map . An old
chocolate factory in the backstreets has been given a hippy-chic makeover by a local cooper-
ative and serves up veggie pastas, turnovers, couscous, quiches and salads (dishes around
€8.50). Drinks are great too - dozens of teas, coffees, organic wines, juices and shakes - and
it's a cool break-from-the-shops spot. Wed-Sat 1pm-midnight, Sun 1-5pm.
Café del Born Pl. Comercial 10, La Ribera 932 683 272; Jaume I; map . No gimmicks,
no fusion food and dodgy local art kept to a bare minimum - the recipe for success at this
ever-popular neighbourhood café-bar. There's a simple Mediterranean menu on offer, while
Sun brunch is the big weekend draw. Daily 8.30am-11.30pm (Fri & Sat until 1am).

TAPAS BARS
El Bitxo c/de Verdaguer i Callis 9, Sant Pere 932 681 708; Urquinaona; map . This is a
great find for drinks and tapas, very close to the Palau de la Música Catalana. It's tiny (four
small wooden tables and a line of bar stools) but there's a friendly welcome, and the food is
good, especially the cured and smoked meats and sausages and regional cheeses (dishes up
to €10). Daily 1pm-midnight.
CalPep Pl.delesOlles8,LaRibera 933107961, calpep.com ; Barceloneta; map .
There's no equal in town for fresh-off-the-boat and out-of-the-market tapas. You may have
to queue (there are no reservations), and prices are high for what's effectively a bar meal (up
to €50 a head) but it's definitely worth it for the likes of impeccably fried shrimp, grilled sea
bass, Catalan sausage and beans, and baby squid and chickpeas - the whole show overseen
