Bytrain Renfe trains ( renfe.com ) run at least hourly to and from Barcelona Sants, calling
at Pg. de Gràcia station, and take between 1hr 15min and 1hr 40min. The new high-speed
AVE service cuts the trip to 37min, though tickets are much more expensive than standard
fares. Girona's train station lies across the river in the modern part of the city - walk down to
theavenue,turnleftandthentakethesecondrightofftheavenue,downc/AlvarezdeCastro,
towards Pl. Catalunya and the river (10min walk). There's also a taxi rank at the station.

map and have bus and train timetables for all onward and return services.
EATING AND DRINKING
There are plenty of cafés and restaurants along Rambla de la Llibertat and on the parallel Pl.
del Vi, and also a group of bars with lovely terraces sited at the opposite end of the old town,
underSantFeliuchurch.Thereareanotherdozenorsorestaurants(frompizzeriastocreative
Catalan restaurants), all with alfresco terraces, just over the river in pretty Pl. Independencia.

ropub serving creations like peanut-encrusted tuna with honey-coconut mayonnaise and wild
mushroom risotto with foie gras and Parmesan (€6-18). The menú del dia (€15) is excellent
value. Tues-Sat 8am-4pm & 8.30-11.30pm; closed 3 weeks in Aug.

high walls of Sant Feliu church, this all-day café-bar makes a pleasant stop for a drink. Food
(€3-7) is along the lines of salads, tapas, sandwiches and burgers. Daily 8am-midnight.
Le Bistrot Pujada de Sant Domènec 972 218 803, info@cafelebistrot.com . A good-
value bistro that often puts out tables on the steps below the church. The food is straightfor-
ward Catalan, and a decent lunch will cost you €15 during the week and €20 at the weekend.

(€11 or €16, otherwise mains €5-15) than at this simple restaurant - the food's reasonable
enough and there's outdoor dining, while the room upstairs has river and cathedral views.

Figueres
FIGUERES , a provincial town in the north of Catalunya with a population of some thirty
