The new
Museu del Dissney
brings together the collections of the
Museu de les Arts
Decoratives
(Decorative Arts Museum), the
Museu de Cerámica
(Ceramics Museum), the
Museu Tèxtil i d'Indumentària
(Textile and Clothing Museum) and the
Gabinet de les
Arts Gràfiques
(Department of Graphic Arts) in the
Disseny Hub building
. It will be open
tothepublicfromspring2014,butinthemeantime,thebuildingaloneisworthseeing.Nick-
named La Grapadora (“The Stapler”) after its shape, it consists of two parts: a narrow, zinc-
plated above ground section whose top four floors cantilever over the motorway; and a wide,
semi-subterranean base that houses temporary exhibitions, a public library, a cafeteria and
the office headquarters of local design institutions such as the Foment de les Arts i del Dis-
seny (FAD). The Hub stands right in the middle of the Glòries rejuvenation zone - visitors
can enter the top portion (where the Museu del Disseny will live) from Plaça de les Glòries
CatalanesorthelowersectionviaCarrerd'Àvila.TheinnovativedesignmeanstheHubhasa
net floor area of 25,000 square metres, but occupies a dramatically smaller footprint at street
level. It's an excellent balance of building and outdoor space, with design credentials worthy
of its future tenants.
