In-Depth Information
The long streets west of Rambla de Catalunya as far as Barcelona Sants train station
- making up the Esquerra de l'Eixample - are perhaps the least visited by sightseers.
WithallthemajorarchitecturalhighlightsfoundontheEixample'sright-handside,the
Esquerra (left-hand side) was intended by its nineteenth-century planners for public
buildings, institutions and industrial concerns, many of which still stand. However, it
does contain some cultural interest - not least two stand-out art galleries and an eye-
catching public park or two - while over on the western fringes, the former Arenas
bullring has been restyled as a spiffy leisure and shopping complex. This is also one of
Barcelona's hottest night-out destinations, featuring both Michelin-starred restaurants
andsomeofthecity'sbestbarsandclubs,particularlyinthegay-friendlystreetsofthe
so-called Gaixample district, behind the university.
