The city zoo, the ParcZoològic , takes up most of the southeastern part of Ciutadella park. It
boasts over two thousand animals from over three hundred different species - a number seen
by some as too high for a zoo that is still essentially nineteenth century in character, con-
fined to the formal grounds of a public park. Nonetheless, it's hugely popular with families,
as there are mini-train and pony rides, a petting zoo and daily dolphin shows alongside the
main animal attractions. The many endangered species on show include the Iberian wolf and
big cats such as the Sri Lankan leopard and the Sumatran tiger. However, the zoo's days in
its current form are numbered, since there's been a belated recognition that it needs to mod-
ernize. Over the next few years its animal areas and habitats will be completely remodelled
as the zoo attempts to expand its education, conservation and research facilities.
