El Raval's western edge is defined by the Ronda de Sant Pau and the Ronda de Sant Antoni,
and where the two meet stands the handsome Mercat de Sant Antoni , the neighbourhood's
major produce market, dating from 1876. Come on Sunday and there's a book and coin
market (8.30am-2.30pm) here instead, with collectors and enthusiasts arriving early to pick
through the best bargains, while kids and their shepherding parents stand on the sidelines
swapping Panini and Pokémon cards.
MostofBarcelona'soldmarkets arebeingrevamped, asthenineteenth-century engineering
starts to fail, and Sant Antoni is no exception: it's being remodelled entirely (for completion
in late 2015), though its external character has been retained - a temporary market on Ronda
de Sant Antoni continues to operate while works continue (though the topic and coin market
still takes place around the perimeter of the original market building). Meanwhile, the tradi-
tional place to take a break from shopping is Els Tres Tombs, the restaurant-bar across the
road on the corner of Ronda de Sant Antoni. You wouldn't make a special trip out here for it,
but it's a handy place for the market, open from 6am - the far better local café is the nearby
Federal .
