Adjoining MACBA is the
Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona
, which hosts
some really good art and city-related exhibitions (ranging from photography to architecture)
and supports a varied cinema, concert and festival programme. The imaginatively restored
building is a prime example of the juxtaposition of old and new; originally built in 1714 on
the site of an Augustinian convent, it was once an infamous workhouse and lunatic asylum.
The main courtyard (now called the Plaça de les Dones) still retains its old tile panels and
presiding statue of Sant Jordi (patron saint of Catalunya). At the back of the building, the

on the modern square joining the CCCB to the MACBA.
