Figure 10.15
Predicted and experimental load versus displacement curves of specimen RMB
precast column segments with hollow cross sections of 200 mm thick walls and a precast cap
beam. A schematic diagram of the test specimen is shown in Figure 10.16. The major design
parameters of the specimens are shown in Table 10.3, while Table 10.4 lists their material
properties. The designed gravity load of each specimen equaled 1456 kN. The concrete
compressive strengths of the specimens ranged from 30 to 55 MPa as shown in Table 10.4.
Each specimen had four prestressing tendons. Each tendon comprised of two seven-wire
strands made of steel equivalent to ASTM A416 Grade 270. Each strand had a nominal
diameter of 15.24 mm. The total design prestressing force in the two specimens (C5C and
C8C) were 1042 kN. Energy dissipation (ED) bars, having diameters of 16 and 25 mm, were
provided across the joints of the precast segments. The ED bars were made of steel equilavalent
to A760 Grade 60 steel. The average yield strength and the ultimate strength of the ED bars
were 434 kN and 653 kN, respectively.
