8.1.1.1 Transverse Stirrup Force
In the plasticity truss model theory for beams, we have assumed that the shear force in a
cross-section is uniformly distributed along the depth of the beam, i.e. shear flow is constant
in the transverse direction. In a beam subjected to concentrated load at midspan, the shear
force should also be constant along the length of the beam within one half-span, i.e. shear flow
should also be constant in the longitudinal direction. Since any element in the web in the main
regions of the beam is subjected to an identical pure shear condition, the stirrup force should
