individuals develop meningoencephalitis. It is not known why most people are
unaffected by the organism, while others develop a rapidly progressive menin-
goencephalitis, with a very high mortality rate (about 95%). Naegleria menin-
goencephalitis accounts for several deaths in the United States of America
each year. Several recent cases of Percolozoan meningoencephalitis have
occurred in individuals who used unsterilized water in Neti pots to irrigate their
nasal sinuses.
