Fig. 5 Philippe de la Hire presented a map to the Paris Academy of Sciences in 1683 which
showed the real outline of France compared with where it had previously been thought to lie.
Brest lay 140 km nearer Paris than was thought until then. The area of France had been
reduced by 20%. This “dramatic” map was published ten years later in 1693 as a 'Map of
France Corrected by Order of the King.' This was the first map to show the Paris Meridian
