In-Depth Information
Above here is the Moulin de la Galette, the location of the northern
sight or “mire” of the Paris Observatory telescopes. Beyond at number
100, on top of the building, there is the dome of a large observatory
constructed in 1860 by David Gruby, and beyond at Number 112 is the
Rue de la Mire, named for the sighting marker for the meridian. Turn

14th Arrondissement
The southernmost medallions of the Arago monument are in the area of the Cité
Universitaire and Bvd Jourdan, near the Porte d'Orleans area of the Péripherique
ring road. University City was established between the wars as student accommo-
dation to encourage international students to come to Paris and contains hostels in
a mixture of national styles. My wife was there as a summer student and tells me
that, while the sleeping accommodation was segregated, the sexes mixed in the
common room, named by the women students the salle de chasse (hunting room),
although who was hunting whom she will not say.
Parc de Montsouris
The Parc de Montsouris (near RER station Cité Universitaire) is a draw for the resi-
dents of the area. Young men play football on the flattest area of the grass, young
women walk their dogs past the young men, women and nannies walk their babies,
children run about and graze their knees, and groups of older people sit, gather to
gossip or play chess. The RER railway running to the south of the park and over
bridges to its south do not spoil the charm of the park and its curiosities.
