Cross the Rue de Rivoli and walk east towards Les Halles (turn left into
Rue du Pont Neuf). The headquarters of the French space agency,
CNES (Centre Nationale des Études Spatiales), is in Place Maurice-
Quentin at the corner of the Les Halles garden. In the Jardin des
Halles, above the Forum des Halles, there is a very large sundial
designed by the astronomer Dandrel and made by the sculptor Henri
de Miller (his more famous sculpture nearby is a monumental stone
head in front of the Church of St-Eustache). The sundial, made of fibre
optics, is set to show solar time on the Greenwich Meridian and there
are extensive instructions on how to interpret it. Return to the Louvre
and turn into the Palais Royal, keeping to the left (west).

Exit the gardens of the Palais Royal on the north side, into the Rue de
Beaujolais, and turn left into Rue de Montpensier.

Rue St Honoré in the 18
th century contained the observatory of the mon-
astery of the Capucins, used by the astronomer Pierre Le Monnier (see
the section on the Church of St Sulpice).

the arch leading to the columns of Buren; under the lamp to the left of the
Noxa boutique; under the arch in front of the service entrance to the
Comédie Française; in front of the cafeteria of the Comédie Française;
under the Chartres peristyle, aligned on the black and white tiles between
the 4 th and 5 th line of Buren columns; and in the peristyle of Montpensier
at the entrance of the old number 5 rue Montpensier (7)

Return to Rue de Beaujolais and go through the passage of the same
name into Rue de Richelieu.
