In-Depth Information
The Greenwich Meridian became the world's Prime Meridian by consensus, and
the proposals for time zones were adopted pragmatically. France implemented the
Greenwich Meridian as the basis for the longitude system of its maps in 1911 and
the scientific use of the Paris Meridian faded into history. But like the Paris
Meridian, the status of the Greenwich Meridian as an active scientific device has
faded as well, as the next chapter (Chapter 8) shows.
