d'Angers (1788-1856) is exhibited in the Louvre museum and a mural of him by A.
Sauvage decorates the café-tabac at 53 Bvd Arago, on the corner of the Rue de la
Glacière. His is one of the seventy-two names of French scientists and engineers that
casted into the side structures of the Eiffel Tower, under the first balcony and on the
side opposite the Military Academy. Apart from these there are no public representa-
tions of the man in Paris, although there are statues at his birthplace. This is an
anomaly; as a result, on the bicentenary of his birth and at the suggestion of the Arago
Association, the City of Paris and the Ministry of Culture decided to make up for the
absence in modern times of a memorial in Paris to Arago. They set up an open com-
petition for ideas, which was won by Jan Dibbets.
