café-restaurant in the museum, with a great view over the
north bay. Sandwiches, bagels and simple lunch dishes,
from chowder to burgers, are all under £10; the more
adventurous evening menu features local salmon and lamb

in Lerwick's new cultural complex. Sandwiches or baked

old lodberry, with a good range of cakes, soup and
sandwiches, and what is probably Britain's northernmost

690805. Reliably good curry house, with cheerful, e cient
service and reasonable prices - try the jalfreezi and mop it
up with some garlic nan (mains under £10), or go for the
all-day Sunday buffet (£10 per person). Mon-Sat noon-

Lerwick's friendliest pub is the upstairs bar where local
musicians often gather for a session - Thursday night is

Bressay and Noss
Shielding Lerwick from the full force of the North Sea is the island of Bressay ,
dominated at its southern end by the conical Ward Hill (744ft) - “da Wart” - and
accessible on an hourly car and passenger ferry from Lerwick (takes 5min). he
chief reason for visiting Bressay is the tiny but spectacular island of Noss , off the
east coast, whose high cliffs support a huge seabird colony in breeding season. If
you've time to kill before the ferry back, pop into the Bressay Heritage Centre , by
the ferry terminal.
Noss
Appropriately enough for an island that slopes gently into the sea at its western end,
and plunges vertically 500ft at its eastern end, Noss has the dramatic and distinctive
outline of a half-sunk ocean liner, while its name means “a point of rock”. Inhabited
until World War II it's now a nature reserve and sheep farm, managed by Scottish
Natural Heritage, who operate a RIB ferry from Bressay.
On the island, the old farmhouse contains a small visitor centre, where the warden
will give you a quick briefing and a free map. Nearby is a sandy beach, while behind
the haa (laird's house) is a Pony Pund , a square stone enclosure built for the breeding of
