Isle of Raasay
he fourteen-mile-long island of
Raasay
(Ratharsair) sees few visitors. Yet in many ways
it's the ultimate Skye escape, with plenty of walks - intimate strolls to hidden corners
rather than the wide spaces of Skye - and that thrill of being cast away on a small island.
For much of its history, Raasay was the property of a branch of the Jacobite MacLeods
of Lewis. When the clan was forced to sell up in 1843, the Clearances started in earnest.
In 1921 seven ex-servicemen and their families from the isle of
Rona
were imprisoned
after they squatted in crofts on Raasay. he public outcry led to both islands being
bought by the government - they remain in state hands. Raasay's population now stands
at around two hundred. he ferry docks in Churchton Bay, near
INVERARISH
, the
island's tiny village set within thick woods on the southwest coast.
Dun Caan
Most people come to walk into the interior - a rugged and rocky terrain of sandstone
in the south and gneiss in the north. he obvious destination is the flat-top volcanic
plug of
Dun Caan
(443m) where Boswell “danced a Highland dance” when he visited
with Dr Johnson in 1773. he five-mile trail to the top is easy to follow; it's a splendid
trek along the burn through forest behind Inverarish.
