rooms - all en suite or with private facilities - and
comfy, welcoming lounges to relax in. The room on the
top floor, with a freestandin g ba thtub across the

Lazy Duck Hostel A mile or two south of town, Nethy
Bridge T 01479 821642, W lazyduck.co.uk. Tiny, eight-
bed hostel with its own sauna. Makes a peaceful and
comfortable retreat, with woodland camping (May -Oct )
and great moorland walking on its doorstep. Dorm s £15 ;

EATING AND DRINKING
Craig Bar Woodside Avenue T 01479 872669. Snug
pub full of military aviation memorabilia, from pictures
of fighter planes to dangling model aircraft. Warm
yourself by the fire with a pint of real ale while you
choose some food. The choice is made easy; the jovial
landlord only sells pies (£7.50). Mon-Fri 5pm-
midnight, Sat & Sun 11am-midnight.
Revack Highland Estate Two miles south of town on
the B970 T 01479 872234. At this café-cum-gift-shop on
the 350-acre Revack estate you can watch red squirrels at
play as you tuck into a fresh herring salad with mustard and
dill (£7.95). Daily 10am-5pm.

Kingussie
Twelve miles southwest of Aviemore at the head of the Strathspey Valley, KINGUSSIE
(pronounced “king-yoos-ee”) is a pleasant village best known for the free-to-access
ruins of Ruthven Barracks , which stand east across the river on a hillock. he best-
preserved garrison built to pacify the Highlands after the 1715 rebellion, it makes for
great exploring by day and is impressively floodlit at night.

By train Kingussie's train station is on Station Road, just
south of the A86.
Destinations Edinburgh (Mon-Sat 7 daily, Sun 5 daily; 2hr
40min); Glasgow (Mon-Sat 4 daily, Sun 2 daily; 2hr
30min); Inverness (Mon-Sat 12 daily, Sun 7 daily; 55min);
Newtonmore (Mon-Sat 5 daily, Sun 3 daily; 5min).
By bus Buses arrive and depart from near the Duke of
Gordon Hotel, on the High Street.
Destinations Edinburgh (5 daily; 3hr 30min); Inverness
(Mon-Sat 8 daily, Sun 5 daily; 1hr); Newtonmore (roughly
hourly; 5min).

appealing places to stay in the whole of Speyside, this relaxed
but stylish restaurant (see below) with ro oms i s located in a
converted tweed mill on the River Gynack. £120
The Laird's Bothy 68 High Street T 01540 661334,
W thetipsylaird.co.uk. For a cheap, comfortable bed try
this hostel on the High Street. It's attached to the Tipsy Laird
pub, which hosts occasional jam sessions and karaoke

EATING AND DRINKING
The Cross North of the centre off Ardbroilach Road
T 01540 661166, W thecross.co.uk. The most ambitious
(and costly) restaurant in the area, where a three-course meal
carefully crafted from fresh Scottish ingredients like Shetland
lobster and Perthshire lamb costs £50. Daily 7-8.30pm.
The Potting Shed 84 High Street. Cute little tearoom
with teacups hanging in the window. Good spot for a drink,
but your main objective should be devouring one of the
tasty, wheat-free cakes with fruity fillings (£4.50). Thurs-
Mon 9.30am-5pm.
Newtonmore
Kingussie's closest neighbour, NEWTONMORE , is also its biggest rival. he two
villages, separated by a couple of miles of farmland, both have long-established
shinty teams that battle for dominance in the game - a fierce indigenous sport
