In-Depth Information
Bullers of Buchan
Reached by driving one and half miles north from Cruden Bay along the A975, or
walking three precarious miles north from Slains Castle along the cliffs, the
Bullers of
Buchan
is a splendid 245ft-deep sea chasm, where the ocean gushes in through a
natural archway eroded by the sea. his is some of the finest cliff scenery in the country
and attracts a huge number of (smelly) nesting seabirds.

Fraserburgh
Just west of a swooping, sandy bay,
FRASERBURGH
is a large and fairly severe-
looking place, edged by warehouse-like superstores and farmland. he intriguing
Museum of Scottish Lighthouses
makes a short visit worthwhile, and you'll find
good, seafront hotel rooms nearby in the sleepy fishing village of
St Combs
.

decommissioned lighthouses, and a display on various members of the famous
“Lighthouse” Stevenson family. he highlight of the museum is the tour of Kinnaird

Fraserburgh to Gardenstown
he coast road between
Fraserburgh
and
Gardenstown
, fifteen miles to the west, is
particularly attractive: inland there are villages with pretty churches and cottages, while
countless paths lead off it to ruined castles, clifftop walks and lonely beaches.
Pennan
PENNAN
is a tiny fishing hamlet that lies just off the B9031 down a steep and
hazardous hill. Consisting of little more than a single row of whitewashed stone
cottages tucked between a cliff and the sea, the village leapt into the limelight when the
British movie
Local Hero
was filmed here in 1982; you can stay at one of the
identifiable landmarks from the film, the
Pennan Inn
(see p.384).
Crovie
Locals in the tiny but appealing village of
CROVIE
(pronounced “crivie”), on the other
side of Troup Head from Pennan, frequently have their doorsteps washed by the sea.
