Stonehaven and around
A pretty, pebble-dashed harbour town linked to Aberdeen by the A90,
STONEHAVEN
is
a popular summer getaway. Its location along the sheltered Kincardine coastline
certainly adds to the appeal, as does the respected

civic buildings, connects the harbour and its surrounding
old town
with the late
eighteenth-century planned centre on the other side of the River Carron. On New

Fireballs
, when locals
parade its length swinging metal cages full of burning debris around their heads to
ward off evil spirits for the coming year. he
new town
focuses on the market square,
overlooked by the dusky-pink granite market hall with its impressive steeple.
Another reason to base yourself in Stonehaven is
Dunnottar Castle
, a stunningly
moody ruin perched on jagged cliffs two miles south. he area south and west of this is
known as the
Mearns
, an agricultural district of scattered population and gathering
