he striking Broughty Castle and Museum , right by the seashore, is worth a look, if
only to admire its location at the mouth of the River Tay. Built in 1496 to protect the
estuary, its four floors now house local history and military exhibits and cover the story
of Broughty Ferry from 400 million years ago to its development as a fishing village.

Claypotts Castle

Just north of Broughty Ferry, at the junction of the A92 and B978, the chunky bricks
of Claypotts Castle constitute one of Scotland's most complete Z-shaped tower houses.
Built between 1569 and 1588, its two round towers have stepped projections to
support extra rooms, a sixteenth-century architectural practice that makes Claypotts
look like it's about to topple over. Note that you may only view the castle from outside.

BY PLANE
Dundee's airport ( T 01382 662200, W hial.co.uk) is 2 miles
west of the city centre. There are no buses into the centre so
expect to fork out around £6 for a taxi.
Destinations London City (Mon-Fri 2 daily, 1 on Sat, 1 on
Sun; 1hr 25min).
BY TRAIN
Trains arrive and depart from the station on Riverside Drive,
about 300yd south of the city centre, near the river.

Bike hire Spokes, at 272 Perth Road ( T 01382 666644) is the
most central option for cycle hire, with bikes for £15/day.
Cycle routes/walking trails At the tourist o ce (see
below) you can get route maps for Maritime and Heritage
Walking Trails (1-2hr duration; free), which depart from
the DCA. There's also a map of a citywide cycle route.
