Midway between the Wellgate and Overgate shopping centres is the mottled spire of
St Paul's Episcopal Cathedral , a rather gaudy Gothic Revival structure designed by
George Gilbert Scott, notable for its vivid if sentimental stained glass and floridly
gilded high altar. Immediately in front of the cathedral is a statue to one of the city's
heroes, Admiral Duncan of Camperdown , who defeated a Dutch fleet not far offshore
from Dundee during the Napoleonic Wars.

he McManus Art Galleries and Museum , Dundee's most impressive Victorian structure,
is located in Albert Square in the heart of the city. Recently reopened after a major
restoration, this is an unmissable stop for art lovers. he ground-floor rooms explore
the nature of museums, the surrounding natural landscape and the making of modern
Dundee, while upstairs there's the splendid Victoria gallery , its curved red walls hung
with an impressive collection of works by masters including Rossetti and Henry
Raeburn. he rest of this floor is equally engrossing: Dundee and the World shows an
eclectic ethnographic collection; the 20th Century Gallery showcases work by the
Scottish Colourists and others; the Long Gallery is lined with historic and modern
ceramics; while Here and Now displays fine art acquisitions, including contemporary
photography. he museum's bright and attractive café is also a good pit stop, especially
on a sunny day when you can sit on the stone terrace outside.

An award-winning museum, Verdant Works tells the story of jute, from its harvesting in
India to its arrival in Dundee on clipper ships. he museum, set in an old jute mill,
makes a lively attempt to re-create the turn-of-the-century factory floor, the highlight
being the chance to watch jute being processed on fully operational quarter-size
machines originally used for training workers.

Principal among the city's many arts venues is the hip and exciting DCA , or Dundee
Contemporary Arts, a stunning five-floor complex that incorporates galleries, a print
studio, a classy design shop and an airy café-bar. It's worth visiting for the stimulating
temporary and touring exhibitions of contemporary art, as well as an eclectic
programme of art-house films and cult classics (see p.350).
