Perth's compact centre occupies a small patch on the west bank of the River Tay,
flanked by two large areas of green parkland, known as the North and South Inch. he
city's main shopping areas are High Street and South Street , as well as St John's
shopping centre on King Edward Street. Opposite the entrance to the centre is the
imposing City Hall , used by Scotland's politicians for party conferences. Perth is at its
most attractive along Tay Street , with a succession of increasingly grand buildings along
one side and the attractively landscaped riverside embankment on the other.
Brief history
During the reign of James I, Parliament met in Perth on several occasions, but its glory
was short-lived: the king was murdered in the town's Dominican priory in 1437 by Sir
Robert Graham, who was captured in the Highlands and tortured to death in Stirling.
In May 1559, during the Reformation, John Knox preached a rousing sermon in St
John's Kirk, which led to the destruction (by those Knox later condemned as “the rascal
multitude”) of the town's four monasteries - an event that quickened the pace of
reform in Scotland. Despite decline in the seventeenth century, the community
expanded in the eighteenth century and has prospered ever since; today the whisky and
insurance trades employ significant numbers.
