In-Depth Information
fortress here, long since destroyed. With the relative decline of its seaborne trade, Ayr
reinvented itself in the nineteenth century as an administrative centre and a popular
resort for middle-class Victorians. While there are few real sights in town to detain you,
its prestigious racecourse pulls in huge crowds, there's superb golf all around, and the
local tourist industry continues to do steady business out of the fact that Rabbie Burns
was born in the neighbouring village of Alloway (see p.164).
