Overlooking the River Tweed,
Paxton House
is a perfectly proportioned Palladian
mansion built in 1758 for Patrick Home of Billie. It was a desperate and unsuccessful
attempt to woo his Prussian lover, Sophie de Brandt, lady-in-waiting to Queen
Elizabeth Christine, wife of Frederick the Great. Forced to return home on the murder
of his mother - apparently, the butler did it - he built Paxton for his intended bride,
but, sadly, they were never to meet again.
he interior features a stunning collection of Chippendale furniture, commissioned
by the cousin to whom Patrick sold the house on the death of Sophie. he other
