In-Depth Information
We now arrive at the great square in Karaköy, where all the streets
of Galata converge chaotically towards the bridge. There is more of
Galata yet to see, along the European shore of the lower Bosphorus,
but perhaps we should pause here and leave the rest for our next
tour. And besides, whenever one is in this area one is always tempted
to relax at a café or restaurant on the lower level of the bridge.
From there one can observe how the sometimes golden light of late
afternoon gives even Galata a brief and spurious beauty. Then, as
the sun sets behind Stamboul, silhouetting the domes and minarets
of the imperial mosques on the skyline of the old city, the polluted
waters of the Golden Horn do indeed look like molten gold.
