1.4 Variations in sea level
There are three types of variation:
• oscillations linked to the tides: by decreasing the hydraulic gradient,
they modify the hydrodynamic functioning of the aquifer. The latter is,
in fact, also subject to more or less dampened tidal effects, depending
on its intrinsic physical characteristics;
• historic oscillations: the level of the oceans has known numerous
positive and negative variations. The astronomical parameters of
the Earth's rotation and its revolution around the Sun determine
Milankovitch cycles, the analysis of which can explain the observation
that a cooler phase provokes a glaciation approximately every 90,000
