On February 8th, 1885, during a high fl ood, the right bank was deeply
scoured by the water and the dam support collapsed. The mantling deposits,
initially indurated during construction, had gradually become less and
less consolidated due to the effects of infi ltration, signifi cantly weakening
the ground on which the dam's foundations had been built (Gignoux &
Barbier, 1955).
