around 1 m·day -1 . Modifi cations to riverbanks can also increase the surface
area in contact with the aquifer formation. Diversion dams can direct the
river water towards infi ltration basins. Infl atable rubber dams are used in
California (USA), in order to divert water from the Santa Ana river into
infi ltration basins, artifi cially recharging an aquifer supplying 2 million
inhabitants. 70% of the water pumped comes from this setup. The dams
are infl ated or defl ated at will, depending on the discharge and turbidity
of the river, in order to collect only clear water and avoid the silting up of
the basins (Detay, 1997).
