improvement for you if you use the two codecs in question. The MPEG-2 codec is mostly used by DVD playback or
digital TV, and the VC-1 is used by Windows-created videos that have extensions like “.WMV.” I hope you don't have
too many WMV files around, but if you do, VC-1 will help you out.
There is one main prerequisite to buying the license and that is having your CPU's serial number. It's not the
serial number printed anywhere on your board. The quickest way to get your serial number is booting into Linux and
running this command:
# cat /proc/cpuinfo
The last line of this output should be your serial number. You can see my serial number in Figure 7-4 on the last
line that says “ Serial: 00000000e1a985d1 .” This is the number that you need to enter on the foundation's web site in
the next step.

Once you have your serial number, fire up your favorite web browser and go to the Raspberry Pi store at
http://www.raspberrypi.com/ . Search for the VC-1 license key and MPEG-2 license key.
Select the license you want and enter your serial number as shown in Figure 7-5 .
