In-Depth Information
Once you have downloaded an image, extract and write it the same way you wrote the Fedora image in Chapter 2.
If you want to use the latest build, then you're going to need to point your browser to
http://sources.openelec.tv/
tmp/image/
and find the latest release. The file names have the date in them so it's easy to identify which is the newest
release. You can see what the download site looks like in Figure
7-1
.

Download the latest release and extract it. It's simple to extract the tarball as you can see in Figure
7-2
.

Extracting the tarball
The install script for OpenELEC has some very small dependencies and it's more than likely your distribution
already has the needed tools. The dependencies are
parted
,
mkfs.vfat
,
md5sum
, and
partprobe
. If any of them are
missing, the install script will warn you and quit. To install OpenELEC to your SD card you need to do the following:
1.
Insert your blank SD card into the machine where you extracted the tarball.
Find the SD card device via
dmesg
or your other favorite tool. I like to look in
dmesg
after
I insert the SD card. In Figure
7-3
you can see that my SD card is 8 GB in size and is the
device named
sde
.
