Extending the Found Set
Extending the found set works a lot like constraining it. This time, though, you're asking
FileMaker to perform a new find (through all records in the database), and then add the re-
cords it finds into your found set. You end up with all the records you already had, plus any
new ones found. Suppose you've already found your North Carolinian folks, and you want
all the Kentuckians as well:
1. In Find mode, in the State field, select KY .
So far, you're doing exactly what you'd do in every other find.
2. Choose Requests Extend Found Set .
This time, FileMaker looks through every record in the database for any Kentucky
residents. Each time it finds one, it adds it to your existing found set. When it's done,
you have all the North Carolinians and Kentuckians in one found set.
Refining Searches with Find Operators
Normally, FileMaker uses a pretty simple rule to decide whether a field's value matches the
search term you entered (the criteria): If every search term you entered in the criteria appears
at the beginning (matching the first characters) of any word in the field, then FileMaker con-
siders it a match. Techies call this kind of search a leading-edge search .
For example, if you put for in the note field in a find request, any of these notes match:
▪ All for one and one for all.
▪ We will forever remember.
▪ Back and forth it went.
On the other hand, neither of these match:
▪ Wherefore art thou Romeo?
▪ Before there was art, there was an artist.
