Searching with “OR” Conditions
If an AND search is more restrictive than a single criteria search, an OR search is less re-
strictive. That is, you almost always find more records with an OR search, since a record has
to match only one of the many search terms you set up in order to get into the found set. To
convert the previous example to an OR condition, think of it like this: “I need to find every-
body who either lives in Kentucky or is marked as Active.” So your active people who live
in Nebraska (or anywhere, for that matter) show up in your found set, as do inactive Ken-
tuckians.
To create an OR condition, you add one small step to the process you just learned. Before
you type the second search term, create a new find request by choosing Requests→Add New
Request. Notice that the New Request command is the same one that creates a new record
when you're in Browse mode. Different modes, different menus, same keyboard short-
cut—Ctrl+N ( -N). Once you've typed the info for your second request, you can use the
topic icon to flip back and review or edit the first one. When you're done, click Perform
Find.
TIP
You can make your search criteria as complicated as you like, with dozens of requests, even mixing
AND and OR terms within the same search. Just remember that you put a new term in the same re-
quest for an AND condition, and you create a new request for an OR condition.
