Database Reference
In-Depth Information
The Specify Table dialog box now shows tables from the Leads database. There's
only one, and it's called Zip Codes. FileMaker selects the Zip Codes table and sug-
gests the TO name Zip Codes for it. Since it doesn't duplicate any TO name in your
file, you don't have to change it.
4. Click OK .
FileMaker adds the new occurrence to the graph. As Figure 14-18 shows, you can tell
at a glance that it's an occurrence of what FileMaker calls an external table because it
shows you the table occurrence's name in italic.
Figure 14-18. External tables' names display in italic. To find out which database it comes
from, press on the little arrow to the left of the TO's name to show the information window.
FileMaker displays the source table's name, the Data Source (or file name), the Source
File's path and whether the file's access protection (page 752) is turned on.
5. Drag the Zip Code::Zip Code field to the Customer::Zip Code field .
You've created the relationship you'll need to change Customer::City and Cus-
tomer::State to lookup fields. See Lookups for a refresher on creating lookups.
Once you have the lookups set, click OK to close the Manage Database dialog box. Switch to
Browse mode and type a Zip code to test the lookups.
Defining Data Sources Using a Path
When you added the Zip Codes TO to your graph in the previous section, FileMaker created
an External Data Source reference. That's the path FileMaker uses to manage the data, so
you never have to think about the connection. But these references aren't dynamic. That is, if
you move the Zip Codes.fmp12 file from the location recorded in your file reference,
FileMaker won't be able to show you the data in the file until you update the reference.
Choose File→Manage→External Data Sources and then double-click the file reference to
edit it.
You use this same set of dialog boxes to create a data source manually. Give the data source a
logical name and then click the Add File button to navigate to the file's location. If you
