around to make room. In this case, you want the blue line to appear to the left of the
First Name column.
3. Let go of the mouse button .
FileMaker moves the Last Name column to its new home, shifting the other columns
to the right to make room.
The column headings also make it easy to sort your data, but if you use the column
headings to sort by Last Name, that doesn't automatically sort the First Name field,
too. You can do a multifield sort, but it's a bit tricky. Here's how to do a multifield
sort by Last Name and then First Name:
4. Click the Last Name column head and then Ctrl+click (Windows) or -click
(Mac) on the First Name column head .
Both columns are selected.
5. Click the triangle to the right of either column head to display the menu. Then
choose Sort Ascending .
The records are sorted by Last Name and then where last names are the same, they're
subsorted by First Name.
If you prefer, you can choose the Sort Records dialog box ( Understanding Sorting ) instead.
Modifying Table View
Table view is handy for scanning through a lot of data quickly. It's the only view where the
Status toolbar shows a Modify button that lets you customize the view. Out of the box, Table
view shows every field you see in Form view, but you may prefer to see less information
when you're scanning tables, and you can do that with the Modify button. For example, the
Created and Modified fields may not be useful to you in Table view, so you can turn off their
display; the fields still show up in Form view, though. Here's how to change the fields you
see in Table view:
1. In the Status toolbar, click Modify .
The Modify Table View dialog box appears with all the fields from your Form view
listed and checked.
2. Click the checkbox to the left of the fields you don't want to see, like Creation
Date and Modification Timestamp, as shown in Figure 2-3 .
In the background, you can see the fields disappear from Table view as you click each
one.
