Figure 2-2. This database is the same one shown in Figure 2-1, showing the same active record,
but this time the layout is in Table view. The field labels are now column heads, showing a small
triangle when you hover over them. Click the triangle to see a pop-up menu of commands you can
use to sort and summarize your records. Much as with a spreadsheet, you can drag the right edge
of each field to change its width. If you see a field displaying a “?” instead of data, just widen the
field and the data appears. Notice that the State field, which has a pop-up menu in Form view, also
shows the pop-up menu in Table view.
Each column represents one of your fields, and the order of the columns matches the order
you go through the fields when tabbing. For example, the first column is the field you wind
up in when you press Tab for the first time. Another Tab takes you to the second column.
Rearranging Columns in Table View
In Table view, you can move columns around by dragging them. To switch the First Name
and Last Name columns, for example, do the following:
1. Point to the words Last Name and then press the mouse button .
FileMaker darkens the column header to show you it's selected.
2. Drag the column to the left of the First Name column .
You see a blue line extending from the top of the window to the bottom. This line
shows you where the column lands when you let go. All the other columns shift
