Figure 8-36. While the People Detail (formatted) layout is a showpiece of compact and efficient
design, it doesn't leave room for a photograph of any decent size. Fortunately, there's plenty of
room to add that “Show Photo” button that pops a photo right over the layout when you want it.
Slide Controls
Efficient use of layout space has always been important to FileMaker database design. With
the rise of FileMaker Go on small touchscreen devices, database developers often have to
make do when less real estate than ever before. While tab controls ( Using Tab Controls ) are a
reliable way to layer content, you still need to have enough space at the top for the clickable
tab headings. Slide controls offer a way to minimize the screen space given over to naviga-
tion, or even remove it entirely.
In this example, you'll create a touchscreen-friendly interface courtesy of a slide control:
1. Download the People.fmp12 example file, navigate to the Slide Control layout .
Make sure you're in Layout mode (Ctrl+L or -L).
2. Choose Insert Slide control. Move and resize the slide control object to occupy
most of the layout's body part as show in Figure 8-37 .
You can also add a slide control from the toolbar. In Windows, click just to the right
of the Button tool. On a Mac, click and hold the Button tool. When the menu appears,
