Database Reference
In-Depth Information
Figure 8-21. Top: With a tooltip in place, someone needs only to point at the State field and wait a
moment to get a little help. The tooltip shows just below the mouse arrow. Bottom: In Layout mode,
you can choose View→Show→Tooltips to see which elements have a tooltip assigned. In this ex-
ample the State field (circled) has a little “T” badge, indicating a tooltip has been assigned. Follow
the arrow to the Tooltip portion of the Inspector where the content of your tooltip is specified.
Just to the right of the Inspector's tooltip field is a small button with a pencil icon. Click this
button, and you get all the power of calculations. The result of the calculation becomes the
text of the tooltip. (If the calculation has an empty result, then FileMaker doesn't show the
tooltip, so you can use the If function to make the tooltip show up only when it's relevant.)
Autosizing
Take a look at the People Detail layout in this chapter's example file. Your layouts might not
be much prettier than they were before, but they're neater. Things are aligned, grouped, and
sized in a pleasing way. Your fields are more helpful to the data entry process than ever be-
fore.
But what about space efficiency? What happens if you make your database window bigger or
smaller? Well, there's no need to guess. Have a peek at Figure 8-22 to see the not-so-great
news.
