In-Depth Information
3. Select the first choice, “iPhone 320x385 screen.”
The orange stencil lines appear onscreen.
4. Return to the pop-up menu from step 3, and select the second iPhone option .
You have both iPhone stencils on the layout at the same time.
FileMaker provides one slot for you to define a custom stencil size. To set or change the di-
mensions of your custom stencil, choose “Custom Size” from the pop-up menu. If you want
to temporarily hide all your stencils without having to reselect them from the pop-up menu,
just click the Screen Stencil button (not the white triangle next to it) to toggle them on and
off.
Figure 8-11. Designing layouts for the iPhone and iPod Touch presents some unique challenges.
Portrait and Landscape orientations don't simply swap length and width measurements. And when
a user changes orientation, FileMaker can't automatically switch layouts—it just shows a different
part of the existing one. That means every iPhone layout has a dead zone in the bottom right corner
that will never be displayed if the user doesn't scroll.
Data Formatting
All this talk about how fields look and work is well and good, but what if you want to change
how the data inside them looks? A price and a weight both go in a Number field, but they're
different types of values and should look different. FileMaker provides a series of formatting
options for the data inside fields, giving you loads of control over how numbers, dates, times,
and pictures look.
