Saving Style Changes to the Theme
Having (twice!) witnessed multiple objects of the same style revamp themselves in unison,
your first inclination may be to think “Hooray! Change a style once and it updates
throughout my whole database!” Alas, it's not quite that simple, but it can be done. Take a
look back at the Style tab in the Inspector. The Default style lost its red triangle as soon as
you saved your changes, but take a look just above that at the name of the theme. As Fig-
ure 8-4 will attest, it's now “Enlightened*” with an asterisk, and that red triangle appears to
its right. These indicate that you've made changes to a style in FileMaker's stock En-
lightened theme, and those changes have not yet been applied to the whole theme. Put anoth-
er way, changes made to a style apply to that style on the current layout only. For a modified
style to be applied across all layouts, you must also save it to the theme.
Figure 8-4. Another red triangle, another pop-up menu. This time, though, you're saving all the
styles you've changed or created to the current or new theme. They're now available throughout
the database.
Back in Styles.fmp12 , the changes made to the Default style have been applied to all the
fields on the Styles layout. A second layout, Theme Defaults, contains the same six fields as
the other layout formatted with the Default field style for the Enlightened theme. Here's how
to propagate the style changes that are currently confined to the Styles layout out to the rest
of the database:
1. In Styles.fmp12 , choose the Styles layout. Make sure you're in Layout mode, with
the Inspector's Style tab open. Click the First Name field to select it .
In the Inspector, you should see an asterisk at the end of the theme's name and a red
triangle on the button to its right.
2. Click the red triangle and choose “Save Changes to Theme.”
FileMaker warns you that you're about to update every layout in the database with the
changes you made on the Styles layout.
