In-Depth Information
Notice that the record you're looking at is the one you clicked when on the List lay-
out. Also, if you use the topic icon to change records, then you see that you have the
same found set as you did on the List layout. If you perform a different find now and
then switch back to People List, FileMaker lists the records of your new found set. In
other words, the found set does not change when you change layouts based on the
same table occurrence.
Because FileMaker keeps all this in sync, you can use multiple layouts with ease. When you
want to find things, use whatever layout makes it easiest. Need to print a sheet of labels? On
the List layout, find what you want first and then go to the Labels layout and print.
Figure 7-11. When you're in List view, FileMaker puts a little black marker next to the record you
last clicked (in Table view it's a darker gray square) and highlights it—Mike Doughty's record in
this example. That's the current record, as far as FileMaker is concerned.
Layout Setup
FileMaker has a few more layout options that haven't appeared in this chapter so far. These
options let you control overall aspects of the layout. To see them, switch to Layout mode and
then choose Layouts→Layout Setup. You see the window in Figure 7-12 :
▪ The “Save record changes automatically” option is turned on with every new layout. If
you turn it off instead, then FileMaker starts acting…annoying. Whenever you click out
of a record after making changes on this layout, FileMaker pops up a window asking if
you want to save your changes. You can choose to save, cancel the commit and keep
