In-Depth Information
1. Switch to Layout mode and then choose Layouts Layout Setup .
Remember, Layout mode is the only place you can make changes to a layout. You
work this particular piece of magic in the Layout Setup box.
2. On the Views tab, uncheck List View and Table View .
You've just told FileMaker to make these two menu choices off-limits in Browse and
Find modes. After all, they don't make much sense in a layout that's designed spe-
cifically to work as a form.
3. Click OK to close the dialog box .
Honestly, you have to tell some programs everything .
Now, when you switch to Browse mode and look at the View menu, “View as List” and
“View as Table” are grayed out. FileMaker doesn't let you accidentally switch to a useless
view of the data.
Found Sets and Layouts
FileMaker is smart enough to know that the People List and People Detail layouts are show-
ing the same records. In fact, you might use the People List layout to quickly find someone
you want and then switch to People Detail to make some changes.
To make switching back and forth as smooth as possible, FileMaker remembers which record
you're looking at and which records are in your found set as you switch layouts. Prove it to
yourself:
1. Switch to the People List layout .
Nothing new here. You see your records in a list.
2. In Browse mode, perform a simple search. For instance, find someone by typing
a first name in Quick Find or in the Search field in the heading area .
The list changes to show only the matching records.
3. Click one of the records .
Even when you're in List view, FileMaker has the notion of a current record . Since
you can see several records at once, the program indicates which one you last clicked
with a little black marker along the left edge of the record. You can see the marker in
Figure 7-11 .
4. Switch to the People Detail layout .
