Database Reference
In-Depth Information
Figure 5-22. Use the “Go to Related Record” Options window to tell FileMaker what you want to
see and how you want it presented. “Get related record from” determines which table occurrence
to use and “Show record using layout” determines which layout is shown. In the JobsInvoices
database, you have only one table occurrence for each table, so once you choose a TO, there's only
one layout to select. But in a more complex database, you might have to choose from hundreds of
TOs and the dozens of layouts tied to the chosen TO. Later on, you'll learn how to change the found
set of the target table occurrence.
Switch to Browse mode. Make sure you have a customer related to this job. If you don't,
click the Customer ID field and then choose one. Once you assign a customer ID to the Jobs
record, the relationship is valid, and your button will work. Click it and you're transported
directly to that customer's record.
Current Layout is the automatic option in the “Show record using” pop-up menu. If you for-
get to make a selection there, you may have trouble. After all, if you're going to a related re-
cord, it's got to be from a different table occurrence. If your current layout isn't associated
with the target TO, you'll get an error message. Check your “Show record using layout” set-
tings and then try again.
NOTE
The “Use external table's layouts” option in the GTRR Options window applies only when you're
linking multiple files together. You'll learn about that on Connecting Database Files .

If you're looking at a Customer record, then you can see all that customer's jobs, since
they're right there in the Jobs portal. But what if you want to see those jobs (and only those
